The fifth edition of Malta’s Excellence Gaming Awards took place on Friday night, 13th November at the Intercontinental Hotel. Maltco Lotteries has been awarded with five prestigious awards for “Best Industry’s Contributor”, “Best CSR Contributor” “Best Workplace in Malta” and “Best CEO of the Year”. Furthermore, the Gaming industry panel of jurors the selected and presented the most prestigious award of the MiGEA  event  - “Lifetime Achievement Award” to Maltco’s CEO for his longstanding and continuous contribution to the gaming industry .

29 Countries Attended the League of Legends World Championship with $2.3m Won

 

Data presented by Safe Betting Sites indicates that 29 countries (or players from 14.87% of all countries worldwide) participated in the 2020's League Legends World Championships. During the tournament, about $2.34 million in prize money was won.

Asian teams dominate the tournament 

South Korean teams accounted for the highest share at $894,712  followed by China at $499,500 while Taiwan gamers had the third-highest prize money at $181,125.

Denmark teams won $121,500 while Vietnamese gamers capped the top five group with winnings amounting to $78,750.

Other top team teams came from Poland (74,250), Slovenia($60,750), Croatia($40,500), Sweden($33,750) and the United States($29,250).

The tournament was held in the wake of a health crisis that has had an impact on eSports fortunes. According to the research report:

 "It is worth mentioning that the pandemic has in general impacted the esports scene globally. The health crisis fuelled sharp growth in viewers and engagement with esports online, and new opportunities opening up. During the period, esports managed to attract new mainstream consumers in the wake of enforced temporary suspension of traditional sports. The initial shutdown in professional sports leagues also created interest from those leagues’ organizers in running esports tournaments, and from broadcasters in televising them."

In terms of teams, South Korea DAMWON Gaming emerged top with a prize of $562,500 followed by Sunning which won $393,750. G2 Esports and Top Esports finished in the second and third respectively with a cumulative price money of $202,500.

Double achievement for Maltco Lotteries as the company receives WLA and EL certifications on Responsible Gaming, adding two major milestones to its portfolio. 

Recognised for putting its player’s safety at the core of its operations, Maltco has once again been accredited with the highest level of Responsible Gaming Certification (Level 4) by the World Lottery Association (WLA) and also the Responsible Gaming certification from the European Lotteries (EL) Association, which are the two leading associations in the lottery and gambling sector with more than 100 international members being affiliated to them.

Maltco Lotteries added two major milestones to its portfolio for the third consecutive time. The company has achieved the alignment with the EL Responsible Gaming Standards and has also met the criteria to be granted accreditation by the World Lottery Association in accordance with its agreement with the European State Lottery and Toto Association. 

Responsible gaming is an integral part of the INTRALOT Group policy and Maltco as a member of the Group, applied Responsible Gaming practices in order to offer the players exciting, but at the same time secure gaming experiences. Maltco Lotteries has always placed employee and management training and development at its forefront of its priorities. Success in today’s highly competitive digital world depends not only on the latest technology, but also on the company’s ability to recognise the need to invest in its’ people. 

Maltco Lotteries has commissioned the services of StreetHR to provide a 10-week Management Development Programme to improve in vital skills needed to keep employees and managers motivated, productive, updated to skills required.  Some of the topics covered were, Leadership & Management, Generating a Motivated & Skilled Workforce, Managing Performance, Communication, Time Management, Managing Stress & Confrontation and Leading Change & Innovation.  This venture was done in collaboration with JobsPlus using the Investing in Skills Scheme, and although due to COVID-19 there were some space and time limited, the remaining training has been completed online.

CEO of Maltco Lotteries Vasileios Kasiotakis, stated “As management we are not only responsible of our employees, our agents and their assistants good working conditions but also their continuous skills update and upgrade. Training to all is core to Maltco Lotteries philosophy and practice, from the first day of everyone cooperating with the company’’.

iGEN and Gaming Malta collaborate to attract Maltese talent into iGaming 

 

iGEN, the iGaming European Network has launched a new initiative called ‘Why iGaming’ to promote careers in the iGaming sector in Malta. The initiative is driven by iGEN’s 22 member companies, and has the support and collaboration of GamingMalta, a nonprofit set up by the MGA and the Government of Malta. 

 

The Why iGaming initiative has been kicked off with the launch of a new website,  www.whyigaming.eu, containing over 250 open jobs from iGEN’s member companies. While the content is primarily aimed at Maltese residents, it also contains information for foreign nationals who are interested in relocation to Malta in order to work in the industry. Over time the website will be built out to include even more jobs posts, information for foreign nationals seeking work in Malta and career-related industry news. While the website is a core part of the initiative, it will also be expanded to include other local career-related and community activities on behalf of the industry. 

 

Careers in online gambling have traditionally been seen as attractive in Malta due to the salaries and perks on offer as well as exciting growth opportunities. However, initial research performed by Why iGaming has shown that there are perceived barriers to entry.

Our vision is to provide a way for the biggest and most established iGaming companies to connect with the local community and talent, in particular providing a resource to individuals who are interested in working in the sector. MGA publishes Consultation Feedback & Guidance Paper in relation to Suspicious Betting Reporting Requirements & Other Sports Integrity Matters

 

During May 2020, the MGA published a consultation paper in order to gather feedback on the proposed bringing into force of the Suspicious Betting Reporting Requirements together with other measures which the Authority intends to implement in support of its commitment to safeguard the integrity of sports and sports betting.
 
This consultation was open for a period of 7 weeks (ending on 15 July 2020), wherein industry participants and all other interested parties were invited to send their responses to the consultation paper and any other related matters. By the end of this consultation period, the MGA received a number of replies from betting operators, representative institutes, and international bodies.
 
The MGA is publishing the feedback received in order to provide a summary of the responses, together with the respective MGA feedback (click here). Consequently, in conjunction with this publication, the Sports Integrity Unit is also publishing an updated version of the Consultation Paper on Suspicious Betting Reporting Requirements & Other Sports Integrity Matters (click here), which will now act as a Guidance Paper to all MGA licensees on all matters relating to sports betting integrity and the MGA.

iGEN and Gaming Malta collaborate to attract Maltese talent into iGaming 

 

iGEN, the iGaming European Network has launched a new initiative called ‘Why iGaming’ to promote careers in the iGaming sector in Malta. The initiative is driven by iGEN’s 22 member companies, and has the support and collaboration of GamingMalta, a nonprofit set up by the MGA and the Government of Malta. 

 

The Why iGaming initiative has been kicked off with the launch of a new website,  www.whyigaming.eu, containing over 250 open jobs from iGEN’s member companies. While the content is primarily aimed at Maltese residents, it also contains information for foreign nationals who are interested in relocation to Malta in order to work in the industry. Over time the website will be built out to include even more jobs posts, information for foreign nationals seeking work in Malta and career-related industry news. While the website is a core part of the initiative, it will also be expanded to include other local career-related and community activities on behalf of the industry. 

 

Careers in online gambling have traditionally been seen as attractive in Malta due to the salaries and perks on offer as well as exciting growth opportunities. However, initial research performed by Why iGaming has shown that there are perceived barriers to entry.

The MGA publishes a Consultation Paper on Suspicious Betting Reporting Requirements & Other Sports Integrity Measures

 

In August 2019, the Malta Gaming Authority announced the establishment of a Sports Integrity Unit. The Unit’s role consists of the gathering of intelligence and information relating to suspicious betting and serves as liaison with the national platform that is being set up, local and foreign regulatory authorities, law enforcement agencies, betting monitoring systems, sporting bodies and gaming operators in order to investigate irregular and suspicious betting activity.

It is the Authority’s intention to implement a set of Suspicious Betting Reporting Requirements, which will oblige B2C licensees offering betting on sporting events to inform the Authority of any instance of suspicious betting.

Prior to bringing into force these requirements, the Authority is reaching out to stakeholders for feedback on the proposed mechanisms for due consideration. In consolidating perspectives of interested parties through public consultation, the Authority is better placed to implement effective and efficient regulatory processes around suspicious betting in the sports betting sector.

In addition, the Authority is also interested in initiating a dialogue with B2B licensees to consider what their contribution towards sports integrity can look like in terms of detection and exchange of information with either B2C licensees, or the Authority itself. Furthermore, the document underlines other areas of interest which the Sports Integrity Unit shall be looking into in the near future.

Notice on further lifting of restrictive measures related to COVID-19

 

On the 18 of May 2020, Health Authorities announced the lifting of more restrictions which were put in place to combat the spread of COVID-19. As a result of this announcement, Gaming Parlours which have been closed in terms of Legal Notice 76 of 2020, entitled Closure of Places Open to the Public Order, 2020, will re-open as from Friday 22 of May 2020.

The Malta Gaming Authority signs Data-Sharing Agreement with the Darts Regulation Authority

 

A data-sharing agreement has just been signed between the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) and the Darts Regulation Authority (DRA), the regulatory authority for the sport of darts, worldwide. The DRA is responsible for writing and overseeing the regulations in relation to darts within both the professional and amateur ranks.

The DRA’s Chairman, Nigel Mawer QPM, stated that "The DRA performs an important role in keeping darts safe from corruption and match-fixing. This new partnership with the MGA will go a long way towards helping the DRA protect the sport. It sends a clear message that the DRA has the worldwide ability to detect and prosecute players who breach the Betting Rules and damage the sport."

The Malta Gaming Authority publishes amendments to the Gaming Premises Directive

 

The Malta Gaming Authority has carried out a number of amendments to the Gaming Premises Directive (Directive 2 of 2019) (hereinafter the ‘Directive’). The amendments were made in order to guarantee the proper functioning of the regulatory mechanisms applicable to gaming premises and controlled gaming premises. The amendments relate to different aspects of the Directive, including the provisions pertaining to:

  • The conversion of regular players into junket players;
  • The identification of employees;
  • The count procedure; and,
  • The ‘No Objection Procedure’ relating to the approval of controlled gaming premises.

The Malta Gaming Authority signs Data Sharing Agreement with the International Cricket Council

 

The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has recently established a data-sharing agreement with the International Cricket Council (ICC). The ICC is the international governing body of cricket and is made up of over 100 national governing bodies from around the world. The ICC governs and administrates the sport, stages ICC global events, oversees playing regulations and through the Integrity Unit coordinates action against corruption and match fixing. This agreement will facilitate the sharing of information between the two parties, in fulfilment of the requirements at law.

The MGA’s Sports Integrity Manager, Antonio Zerafa stated that, “This data sharing agreement with the ICC represents the Authority’s on-going commitment of combatting match-fixing and other types of manipulation in sports. In fact, this agreement will allow the MGA and the ICC to share crucial data related to the process of detecting, preventing and investigating activities related to manipulation of sports competitions.”

Gaming Innovation Group: Update on the sale of B2C assets to Betsson

 

Gaming Innovation Group Inc. (GiG) signed a Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Betsson Group (Betsson) for the divestment of GiG’s B2C assets, ref. announcement on 14 February 2020.  The deal has today been formally approved by antitrust regulators allowing the transaction to be completed mid-April 2020.

Betsson will pay EUR 33 million on closing, including EUR 2 million for the cash deposit securing GiG’s Spanish casino license. GiG will use part of these proceeds to repay the Company’s SEK 300 million 2017 - 2020 bond, strengthening the balance sheet and significantly reduce the financial leverage ratio.

The sale of the B2C vertical is a result of GiG’s strategic review to reduce complexity and improve efficiency. By divesting the B2C vertical, GiG will free up resources, enabling full dedication on driving and growing its B2B business, securing stable and sustainable earnings and profit margins. GiG sees a large and sustainable addressable market for its platform business as the regulation of the iGaming industry continues and is well positioned with the omni-channel platform offering to capitalise on the continued digital transformation of the worldwide gambling market.

MGA Notice on COVID-19 and Sports Integrity

 

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a disruptive impact on sports worldwide, and by correlation, the betting sector is facing unprecedented challenges. The Malta Gaming Authority understands that it is far from being business as usual for operators in this sector and is thus increasing industry outreach as means to set regulatory expectations in these turbulent times.
Most sporting events have now come to a complete halt, and so have the betting markets. This will naturally spur interest in betting operators to look elsewhere, including betting on events with different risk profiles to those traditionally offered. This includes betting on sporting events which are not run to the same professional degree as the more traditional sporting events on which betting is normally offered, including but not limited to amateur or minor league sports.
Esports is one such betting market which may see a significant boost during these times. Even traditional sports and their respective governing bodies have resorted to esports, with some already hosting simulated versions of their events digitally. Just like other sports, esports has varying levels of professional, semi-professional and amateur tournaments, and whilst many esports events are organised in a highly professional manner, others may not. And in a new sector such as esports, this distinction may not be easy to make.
In order to safeguard the integrity of such events, and warn betting operators of the risks involved, the Malta Gaming Authority is therefore recommending the following:

  • Operators should consider that all esports events are now being run online, and therefore lacking the standard integrity checks done at events.
  • Operators should ensure that matches are not pre-recorded, and risk teams should be aware that esports matches are not always broadcast in real time, and there is often a pre-set delay between the actual match, and the public broadcast.
  • Operators should make sure that customers understand the distinction between esports, and virtual sports, whereby the outcome of the latter is determined by a random number generator.
  • Operators should look into whether tournaments benefit from integrity controls, and whether participants are professional, or otherwise, when deciding on which betting markets to offer.
  • Operators should seek information about the participants/officials involved in the esports events from communicative tournament organisers or from publicly available information.
  • Operators should maintain their betting integrity and fraud checks including making sure that participants/officials involved in esports events are not placing bets.
  • Tournament organisers, broadcasters and sports governing bodies (SGBs) should revise any policies regarding misuse of inside information so as to include also any participants or officials involved in their esports events.
  • Any suspicious betting activity should be reported to the gambling regulator.
  • Any other suspicious activity (not betting related) pertinent to an esports event should be reported to the corresponding SGB, and/or event organiser.

MGA extends deadline for the submission of audited financial statements

 

One of the regulatory requirements that stems from the regulatory instruments applicable to MGA licensees is that of the submission of audited financial statements for each financial year, by not later than 180 days after the end of such financial year.

The Authority is aware that adherence to such obligation is dependent on a thorough process which licensees must undergo with qualified third parties, and that the current situation in Malta and elsewhere, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is such that such this may be difficult to complete in the timeframes which are expected in normal circumstances.

In this light, the Authority is hereby informing licensees whose last concluded financial year ended, or ends, between December 2019 and March 2020, that the deadline for submission of the audited financial statements envisaged in article 41 of the Gaming Authorisations and Compliance Directive is hereby extended to the end of October 2020.  Nevertheless, by not later than 180 days after the end of their financial year, licensees are obliged to submit unaudited accounts, in order for the Authority to retain continuous visibility over their financial standing.

Should other considerations be required as the situation develops, the Authority will act accordingly and proportionately in line with the relevant developments.

MGA issues notice on socially responsible commercial communications with respect to COVID-19

 

The Covid-19 pandemic is proving to be a very trying time for all. The MGA is taking heed of all relevant developments and is constantly proposing adequate and proportionate measures.

The Authority would like to take this opportunity to highlight the fact that this situation could also be particularly distressing to players. The MGA would like to remind its licensees that, in accordance with the Commercial Communications Regulations to which they are subject, all commercial communications must be socially responsible, especially in light of the current situation. Any direct or indirect reference to Covid-19, or any related circumstance, would be considered to amount to a breach of this regulation.

Amongst other requirements, at no point must any commercial communications directly or indirectly:

encourage antisocial behaviour

suggest that gaming can be a resolution to social, educational, personal or professional problems

suggest that gaming can be an alternative to employment

a solution to financial concerns or a form of financial investment

portray gaming as socially attractive or

suggest that solitary gaming is preferable to social gaming

The Authority urges its licensees to pass on this information to any affiliates, and to be vigilant and ensure that their brands are not being promoted in an unethical and socially irresponsible manner.

Gaming Innovation Group: Update on COVID-19

 

Gaming Innovation Group Inc. (GiG) closely monitors the progress of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and consider contingency measures to reduce the risk for our staff and to ensure business continuity. Last week, GiG successfully deployed the Business Contingency Plan (BCP), with all systems and operations performing well. GiG operates from various offices in several countries and local measures have been taken based on the recommendations from the various authorities.

GiG has a robust BCP to ensure continuity of operations, and working from home is an integral part of the day to day operations and it also forms an integral part of the BCP. Proactive steps were taken at the end of last week of advising employees to work from home prior to any announcements by governments. As part of the BCP all changes to production environments will require an extra level of approval to protect both the Company’s and the customers businesses even more. GiG is an agile company, remote development and operational teams are part of day to day operations and will continue to work business as usual.

Casino operations have not been affected by the turmoil and daily Net Gaming Revenue (NGR) in March are in line with January and February for both our own B2C operations, B2B platform clients and for Media Services.

GiG’s operations are mainly directed towards casino, and revenues related to sports betting accounted for around 6.5% of total revenues in 2019 and so far in 2020. A large part of the sports related revenues are from paid Media, and initiatives has already been taken to move media spend from Sports to casino, to reduce the impact on operations from the closure of Sport events. Measures has also been taken to reduce operating expenses related to Sports in both B2C and B2B, and overall, the cancelation of sports events are not expected to have any material impact on GiG’s revenue and EBITDA going forward.

Overall revenues in January and February, including B2C as continued operations, where 6% above the average in Q4-2019 and for the time being we stand by our targets communicated in our 2019 Q4 report.

The divestment of B2C assets to Betsson Group is proceeding according to plan, and the compulsory competition filings have been submitted to the control authorities. Closing is expected mid-April 2020, giving time to receive the necessary approvals.

Gaming Innovation Group divesting its B2C vertical to Betsson Group

 

Gaming Innovation Group Inc. (GiG) signs a Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Betsson Group (Betsson) for the divestment of GiG’s B2C assets which include the operator brands Rizk, Guts, Kaboo and Thrills. Betsson will, through this agreement, become a long term partner of GiG, generating revenues to GiG’s Platform Services. On the day of closing, Betsson will pay €31 million, consisting of a €22.3 million cash payment for the acquisition, plus a prepaid platform fee of €8.7 million. GiG will use the proceeds to repay the Company’s SEK300 million 2017 - 2020 bond.

Betsson commits to keep the brands operational on GiG’s platform for a minimum of 30 months. For the first 24 months, Betsson will pay a premium platform fee based on NGR generated. Based on the expected platform fees, the total value of the transaction is estimated at approximately €50 million.

Betsson, listed at Nasdaq Stockholm, is one of the most dominant European companies in online gambling with a long and strong track record of brand building, both organically and via acquisitions. It offers online casino, proprietary sportsbook and other online games in a multi-brand strategy via gaming licences in twelve countries in Europe and Central Asia.

The sale of the B2C vertical is a result of GiG’s strategic review, initiated in November 2019, leading to an evolved strategic direction to reduce complexity and improve efficiency. By divesting the B2C vertical, GiG will free up resources, enabling full dedication on driving and growing its B2B business, securing stable and sustainable earnings and profit margins. GiG sees a large and sustainable addressable market for its platform business as the regulation of the iGaming industry continues and is well positioned with the omni-channel platform offering to capitalise on the continued digital transformation of the worldwide gambling market.

GiG has, as part of the strategic review, taken a decision to make its technical platform sportsbook agnostic, and partner with other sport book providers to offer the best solutions to its customers. Betsson’s sportsbook solution is intended to be integrated on GiG’s platform-offering. Both GiG and Betsson will gain strategic advantage in having the possibility to sell their respective B2B solutions in an environment without conflict of their own B2C brands.

In order to keep the strategic position for its own proprietary sportsbook, GiG will seek joint ventures or other constellations with partners to release the true asset value of the sportsbook and to secure external long term funding. The ambition is to gradually grow with existing and new long term partners, including the fast growing US market. GiG is one of the few B2B providers present with omni-channel online gambling services in multi-state jurisdictions in the US.

GiG’s full year 2019 revenues were €123.0 million (€29.4m in Q4 2019) with an EBITDA of €14.1 million (€4.8m Q4 2019), assuming B2C as continued operations. The isolated B2C full year 2019 revenues were €79.0 million (€19.0m in Q4 2019) with a full year 2019 EBITDA of €8.1 million (€4.1m in Q4 2019). The divestment of the B2C vertical will lead to a write-down of the remaining book value of the B2C assets and related goodwill, an impairment will be recognised in the fourth quarter 2019.

With the divestment of the B2C vertical, full year 2020 revenues are expected in the range of €70 - 75 million, with an EBITDA expected in the range of €14 – 17 million, including, for comparison, B2C as continued operations until completion of the transaction. 

Expected completion of the transaction is mid April 2020, giving time for the compulsory regulatory approvals from merger control and gaming authorities. GiG is in dialogue with its largest bondholders and will seek consent from its bondholders to extend the repayment of the 2017 - 2020 bond from the maturity date in March 2020 until 22 April 2020. Written resolutions for the two bonds will commence shortly, and GiG has received voting undertakings from investors representing around 53% of the outstanding volume in the 2017 – 2020 bond, and around 46% of the outstanding volume in the 2019 – 2022 bond. As compensation for the extension of repayment date in the 2017- 2020 bond, bondholders in said bond will receive a consent fee of 0.35% of the nominal amount.
